Trust Colin's green glen to deliver

IMMPACT frontline VCO, Colin Glen Trust, has seen its Forest Park classified as an outstanding green space, following a stringent application and judging process by the Civic Trust which manages the award scheme. The Green Flag Award is the national standard for quality parks and green spaces - much like the blue flag status awarded to beaches.

The Green Flag is a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces throughout the UK & Ireland creating a benchmark of excellence for recreational green areas. Colin Glen Trust was also singled out for special praise at the gala dinner and given a standing ovation for its commitment to developing a high quality recreational green space to the community and environmental education to thousands of school children each year, as the only non-council managed park to win.

IMMPACT participant and CEO of Colin Glen Trust, Tim Duffy commented, "We are delighted to have received this award which is a testament to the staff and volunteers who manage and maintain the park. Colin Glen Forest Park will be marking its 20th anniversary later this year so receiving this award is a fantastic start to our celebrations.”

Social enterprises employ more than a million

Almost 1.3 million people, or 3.4 per cent of the working population, are employed in social enterprise, according to a five-year survey of social entrepreneurship in the UK. The research, carried out by Delta Economics, also found that women and people from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities are more likely to be social entrepreneurs than men or people from the white community.

Extern-inate waste more uniquely

One of IMMPACT's direct frontline participants is Extern - a charity working with partners, providing high quality, innovative and community based services for people who have complex needs. The charitable organisation has recently launched it’s new social enterprise 'Extern Recycle' - a recycling project in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Council for the Homeless and Rehab Recycle, based in the Republic of Ireland has been in operation since December 2007 in its new factory in Mallusk. This new business will reduce the amount of electronic waste going into landfill sites while also offering a unique training scheme specifically aimed at getting homeless people into work.

Get noticed in the BIG Black Book

The BIG Black Book Social Enterprise Trade Directory has recently been launched online. The directory has been developed by Work West, a local enterprise agency who have supported the development of a strong social economy sector in NI for almost 20 years. This online directory is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.

It aims to promote opportunities for social enterprises to do more business – by selling to each other, selling to the public and private sectors, and selling to the general public. Entries in the Directory are free to both existing and new or emerging social enterprises setting-up, established or already trading in Northern Ireland.

Get Well Norn Iron

Get Well UK provided a pilot project for the Department for Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) during 2007/8. The aim of the project was to pilot services integrating complementary therapies into existing primary care services in Northern Ireland.

Today sees the public and much anticipated launch of the IMMPACT website. The IMMPACT initiative is a response to the rapidly changing grant funding, administrative and policy environments impacting on the Voluntary and Community sector in Northern Ireland. IMMPACT explores a range of finance and income generation options to develop sustainable funding in supporting frontline organisations meet their mission.
